What Questions Should I Ask A Real Estate Agent Before Hiring Them

Whether you want to sell your house or are planning to buy a new one, hire a real estate agent. Real estate agents in Charlotte, NC understand the local market and have exclusive access to several listings. An experienced real estate agent can help you navigate the property buying/selling process. If you want to sell your home, your real estate agent can develop a strategy to improve your property’s marketability and sell it at a higher price.

Here are some questions to ask a real estate agent before hiring them to assess their skills and competencies.

How long have you been working in the real estate industry?

Look for an agent who has been working as a real estate agent for at least five years. Experienced real estate agents understand the local market, local real estate regulations and laws and how local market conditions can affect property value. An experienced agent has the skills to conduct in-depth market research to uncover hidden market opportunities and threats.

What is the market value of my home? How did you arrive at the figure?

If a real estate agent determines your home’s market value to be higher or lower than what you expect, ask them the reasoning behind the numbers and to show you the calculations. Check the CMA (Comparable Market Analysis) report prepared by the agent to better understand how they determined the fair market value of your property.

Can you provide references?

Request the real estate agent you’re considering to provide at least three references. Talk to agent references and ask them about their experience working with the professional and whether they’d consider the agent in the future.

Do you hold any certifications?

Find out if the agent is a member of an industry body such as the NAR or NWMLS. To become a member of a reputed industry association, a real estate agent must demonstrate their expertise. Members are expected to stay up-to-date with industry trends and keep their skills current. Also ask if they are an e-Pro Certified Seller Representative, Certified Buyer Representative or Certified Marketing Specialist.

How will you keep me updated throughout the property buying/selling process?

The importance of effective communication during real estate transactions cannot be overemphasized. Good communication builds trust and prevents misunderstandings that could lead to conflicts. Ask the agent how often you can expect to hear from them and whether you’ll have access to another team member in case they’re unavailable. Find out how you can reach out to the agent in case of an emergency (text vs email vs call).
